the local sports scene
Half of Major League Baseball spends February and March in the Phoenix suburbs, and one football stadium here grows its grass outside and rolls it in.

The scene
Fifteen MLB clubs hold spring training in the Cactus League, all within about an hour of each other in the metro area, which makes March the busiest sporting month of the Phoenix year. State Farm Stadium in Glendale has a natural grass field on a tray weighing millions of pounds that slides out of the building for sunlight. Chase Field has a retractable roof and a swimming pool beyond the right-field fence, and the Diamondbacks won the World Series in 2001, their fourth season.
Rivalries that matter
The Cardinals' NFC West games against Seattle and San Francisco are the hardest on the schedule. The Suns' rivalry with the Lakers goes back to the 1970s and flares up whenever both are good.
Where to watch
Old Town Scottsdale during spring training; the bars around Footprint Center and Chase Field downtown, which are two blocks apart.
