Oklahoma City hosts the Women's College World Series every year, which makes it the closest thing softball has to a capital.
The local sports scene
The scene
The Women's College World Series has been played in Oklahoma City since 1990 and now regularly outdraws the men's baseball equivalent on television. The Thunder arrived from Seattle in 2008 and play downtown at Paycom Center. Twenty miles south in Norman, Oklahoma's football stadium holds around eighty thousand, and the Sooners' softball programme has been the most dominant in the sport.
Rivalries that matter
Oklahoma against Texas — the Red River Rivalry — is played in Dallas each October on neutral ground. The Thunder's rivalries with Houston and Denver are recent, built on playoff series rather than geography.
Where to watch
Bricktown, beside the arena and the ballpark, is the default; Automobile Alley and the Plaza District are quieter.
