the local sports scene
New York is the only American city that fields two teams in all four major leagues, and the split is never geographic — it is inherited. Yankees or Mets, Rangers or Islanders, Giants or Jets is a question about your family, not your postcode.
The local sports scene
The scene
The Yankees carry 27 championships and the expectation that comes with them; the Mets carry 1969, 1986, and a fanbase that treats suffering as a credential. Basketball runs on the Knicks at the Garden, a building that stays loud through decades that do not deserve it, while Brooklyn's arrival at Barclays gave the Nets a borough rather than a swamp. Both NFL teams play in New Jersey, which locals will mention to you unprompted.
Rivalries that matter
The Subway Series is the obvious one, but the deeper rivalry is Yankees–Red Sox, the oldest sustained grudge in American sport. In hockey, Rangers–Islanders is a class argument dressed as a derby: Manhattan against Long Island. Football's Giants–Jets share a stadium, a parking lot, and very little else.
Where to watch
Midtown is thick with sports bars but the better rooms are in the boroughs — Staten Island for PSAL football talk, the Bronx around the Stadium on a summer night, and the old Irish rooms in Queens where the Mets game is never turned off.

Timberwolves 122, Knicks 104: Scenes from another unimpressive dress rehearsal
Before tonight’s scrimmage, there was talk of coach Chris Finch resting his starters. Fat chance. Only Jonathan Kuminga sat tonight for the Minnesota Timberwolves (3-1), since everyone wants to play at Madison Square Garden, the grandest basketball stage in the world. Indeed, the visitors looked determined to announce themselves while the defending champs (0-3) still […]
