the local sports scene
Austin is a burnt-orange town with a second, louder identity that only arrived in 2021, when Austin FC gave the city its first top-flight professional team.
The local sports scene
The scene
Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium holds about 100,000 and sits in the middle of the university campus, minutes from the Capitol. Austin FC play at Q2 Stadium in north Austin, where the supporters' end is a wall of verde and the club sold out its season tickets before a ball was kicked. High school football is not a footnote here: Westlake and Lake Travis have both won multiple state titles.
Rivalries that matter
Texas against Oklahoma is played every October at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas with the State Fair going on around it and the stadium split down the middle. The Texas A&M series resumed in 2024 after thirteen years apart.
Where to watch
Rainey Street and East Sixth after games; the Q2 Stadium supporters walk up Braker Lane before kickoff.
