the local sports scene

Liverpool is a two-club city where the two grounds are less than a mile apart, separated by a park, and families are routinely split down the middle.

The scene

Liverpool play at Anfield and are the more decorated of the two, with a European history that shapes how the club sees itself. Everton are at Goodison Park, the older club in the city, and have moved to a new ground on the waterfront at Bramley-Moore Dock. The proximity is the point: no other English city has its two clubs this close together.

Rivalries that matter

The Merseyside derby is the most-played top-flight fixture in English football and has produced more red cards than any other. It is also, unusually, a derby families attend together in mixed colours.

Where to watch

The pubs around Anfield and County Road before kick-off. In the city centre, almost everywhere shows the derby.
