the local sports scene
Providence is a Big East basketball city with no professional team above the minor leagues, and it does not seem to mind.
The local sports scene
The scene
The Friars have played in the Big East since the conference was founded in 1979 and fill the Amica Mutual Pavilion downtown, a building everyone still calls by its old name, the Dunk. Brown plays Ivy League sport a mile up the hill. The Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston's affiliate at McCoy Stadium for more than four decades, moved to Worcester in 2021, and the gap is still felt.
Rivalries that matter
Providence against Connecticut is the oldest Big East fixture either side still cares about, and it survived the conference's split in 2013 largely because neither would give it up.
Where to watch
Federal Hill for a meal first; the bars on Washington Street beside the arena on game nights.
