the local sports scene
Memphis got its NBA team from Vancouver in 2001 and built an identity around being the side that grinds.
The local sports scene
The scene
The Grizzlies moved south from Vancouver in 2001 and play at FedExForum, on Beale Street. The Grit and Grind teams of the early 2010s — slow, physical, defensive — gave the city a basketball identity that outlasted the players who made it. Memphis Tigers football fills the Liberty Bowl, and AutoZone Park downtown is regularly called the best minor-league ballpark in the country.
Rivalries that matter
Memphis against Ole Miss and Tennessee are the games with regional weight. In the NBA the Grizzlies' playoff series against San Antonio and Golden State in the 2010s built a lasting animosity.
Where to watch
Beale Street is a hundred yards from FedExForum; South Main and Cooper-Young for something calmer.
