The scene
The Kentucky Derby has run at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May since 1875, without interruption, and the fortnight before it turns into a city-wide festival. Louisville Slugger has made bats here since the 1880s; the factory and museum are downtown under a 120-foot steel bat. Muhammad Ali was born in the city and learned to box here, and the Ali Center sits on Main Street.
Rivalries that matter
Louisville against Kentucky — the Governor's Cup in football, and a basketball game that divides families across the state — is as bitter as any rivalry in American college sport.
Where to watch
Fourth Street Live and the Highlands; on Derby weekend the Churchill Downs infield is its own event entirely.
