the local sports scene

Jakarta packs more football passion into one metro than most countries manage nationally — and the noise carries from Gelora Bung Karno to the kampung screens.

The local sports scene

The scene

Persija and Persib are the two giants whose away days are treated as civic events; the league renamed itself the BRI Super League but the old loyalties did not move. Detik and CNN Indonesia both run sports desks that publish around the clock, which matters in a city where kick-off times cross three time zones of archipelago interest. Basketball and badminton have national-team followings, but football owns the front pages.

Rivalries that matter

Persija against Persib is the eternal divide — Jakarta against Bandung, red against blue, with travel restrictions on away fans because the police know what it means. Persija's derby with Arema is the other fixture that stops the city.

Where to watch

Senayan and Kemang before GBK; Blok M for late highlights on a school night.
